Week 3 - 2021

UPDATE #2:  Unfortunately even with the potential of clearing up later on, we have to postpone today's meet due to the conditions of the fields and trails.

UPDATE #1:  Due to bussing issues, our meet with Diamond has been moved to Friday

Thank You for everyone who filled out our questionnaire, if you have not had a chance you still can using this link.  We got excellent feedback that will help us better run practice moving forward, and are excited at the number of parents that have volunteered to help with our home meets.  Here are some answers to some of the more common questions that came up.

How will meets work?

- Meets will generally begin around 4:00 depending on when we arrive/the visiting team arrives.  The first step is to walk the course to familiarize everyone and then we will move into our stretching and warm-up routines.  At the home meets the girls will run first at our first meet, and we will alternate after that.  We will update the blog with the order of our away meets as well as travel information as it becomes available.  All of the races are between 1.5 and 2 miles (our home course is 1.7), it should take about 20 minutes to run and compile results for each race.  It is town policy that if you plan on driving your athlete home from an away meet, that you notify the coaches with your plan before hand. Here is a map of our home course:

Will there be markers set up so we know where to run the course during meets?

- Each course will have markers (chalk, spray paint, cones, tree ribbons) to mark where the course goes as well as parents and coaches at turns as well.  As mentioned above, we will walk the course before each meet to make sure you know exactly where to go.

What can I do to train on the days we don't have practice?

- Off days are a great day to work on your cardio and do some distance running.  Anything between 2-4 miles will be a great way to improve your endurance.  If you are curious how fast to run, you can base it off of your last race time.  Our results will have per mile pace listed, if you take that time and add about two minutes to it, that should be your training pace.  Distance runs should be relaxed and easy. if you run with a friend you should be able to have a chat for the first 80% of the run, a nice pick-up at the end is a great way to challenge yourself.

If Meets/Practice are cancelled due to rain, how do we find out?

- If meets/practice have to be cancelled students will be notified by office announcement and we will update the blog by noon of that day as well.

What shoes should I wear?

- We would highly recommend wearing shoes specifically designed for running, Marathon Sports in Wellesley has a great staff and selection.  Other cross training type shoes should be fine for the type or activity we are doing.  Basketball sneakers, slip-ons, crocs are not recommended and can lead to injury.

How does the Carlisle Invitational work?

- The Carlisle Invitational is held at the end of the regular season on Monday, October 18.  It is run at Great Brook State Park and serves as a regional championship meet, with 18 local schools participating.  The course is 1.95 miles long and the meet is split into Boys Varsity, Boys Junior Varsity, Girls Varsity and Girls Junior Varsity.  The top 8 runners participate in the Varsity races, the Junior Varsity races are limited to 15 runners.

Is there a Championship Meet?

- We are considering participation in the Middle School State Cross Country Championships in Devens.  Seven runners can race in championship division.  There are also grade level races that individuals can participate in.  The meet is held on Saturday, November 6 and would require two additional weeks of practice.  We plan to gauge athlete/family interest on the meet in a few weeks.

A few reminders to make sure your athlete takes care of as soon as possible:

1. If you have not sent your up-to-date physical into Nurse Hojlo please do so at  Laurie_Hojlo@waylandps.org

2. Please be sure to pay your athletic fee at familyid.com, this must be paid to participate in the first meed

3. Bring a check for $11 to practice for Team Jerseys, write your child's name and jersey size in the memo.  We are hoping to have the Jerseys in for the first meet.
